MACD stands for Moving Average Convergence Divergence. It is a trend-following, trend-capturing momentum indicator, that shows the relationship between two moving averages (MAs) of prices. The MACD was created by Gerald Appel in the late 1970s. The MACD value shows the overall direction of the market. It is calculated by subtracting a slow exponential moving average of the closing prices from a fast exponential average of the closing prices. The MACD will be over zero when the two exponential averages are bullish and under zero when the two exponential averages are bearish. The MACD line is computed as the difference between a "fast" EMA and a "slow" EMA. The Signal line is an EMA of the MACD line. The MACD Histogram is the difference between the MACD/Signal lines (the MACD Histogram by itself can be used reliably for divergence signals). Developed by Gerald Appel in the late seventies, the Moving Average Convergence/Divergence oscillator (MACD) is one of the simplest and most effective momentum indicators available. The MACD turns two trend-following indicators, moving averages, into a momentum oscillator by subtracting the longer moving average from the shorter one.
